FIRST AID WORKSHOP YEAR 5 & 6
This is aimed at year 5 & 6 children, this is free to all schools and supported by Rotary and Lions clubs. It starts with an introduction given to the whole class as laid out below: -
Getting help using the 999 operators.
Police, fire, ambulance, Coast guard, mountain, and mines rescue.
What 999 operators might say, Listen to recordings.
Making hoax calls is dangerous to others that may need help.
Who might be safe to ask for help, where could you go that is safe. When not to approach and where to go to be safe.
Telling the 999 operators where you are, Post code and W3W in case you get lost.
Plan your escape route out of a house or building in an emergency.
Benefits of wearing a helmet.
Followed by a practical workshop in groups of 10.
The practical session will cover recognition of an unconscious casualty, and the help that can be given safely. Learning the recovery position. (5&6)
Recognition of a choking casualty and learning the choking algorithm. (5&6)
Stopping serious bleeding using direct pressure and elevation. (5&6)
Year 6 will also learn CPR at 30 compression 2 breaths or compression only CPR. You will also learn how to use an AED defibrillator.
If they wish to, they may take an assessment after the workshop to obtain a CPR certificate.
(The assessment requires them to deliver CPR and use a defibrillator to a good standard)
The scheme is designed to operate annually so once started in the school the introduction would always be given to year 5’s and the year 6 students would do a short refresher before learning CPR. This scheme was planned by me and supported by Rotary and Lions.
FOR YEAR 8 STUDENTS THEY GET A CHANCE TO REFRESH THEIR SKILL WHILE AT THE COLLEGE
During the week they attend a workshop that will give you some medical skills to help your family, friends and community should something unforeseen happen. You will learn how to apply trauma bandages to stop severe bleeding, how to resuscitate someone using CPR (cardiac pulmonary resuscitation), and how to use an AED (Automatic External Defibrillator). You will also learn how to place an unresponsive casualty in the recovery position (a safe position to leave a person who has become unwell or unresponsive to protect their airway), also learn how to assist someone who is choking due to their airway being obstructed by a foreign body, while using a choking training vest to practice back slaps and abdominal thrusts. During the workshop you will also learn other bandaging techniques. This will be during the 60 min workshops you will attend this week.
WHEN THEY GET TO 6TH FORM THEY CAN DO EITHER A STUDENT FIRST AID COURSE OR AN EMERGENCY FIRST AID AT WORK COURSE THAT CAN BE USED IF THEY HAVE A PART-TIME JOB
